What is 21CN?
The 21s Century Network or 21CN is a major upgrade of BT that will transform their UK telephone and data network into one of the world's leading networks for carrying voice & data using IP technology.
Why is the change needed?
This major upgrade is costing the BT Group Billions and will take years to implement but will allow BT to reduce their overhead costs by simplifying the local and regional telephone exchange operations.
It will provde the introduction of new services & products to both business customers and Network Service Providers.
It will allow the ongoing convergence of data, mobiles, voice and other applications & technologies which include Fast Fibre Broadband.
What is IP Technology?
IP simply stands for internet protocol. It basicly is a type of data transmission. It is not necessarily anything to do with the public internet unless it is transmitted across the public internet. IT Departments use IP as their communication method between office PC's and servers. These do not necessarily travel on the internet but usually over an office Cat5 Network or Local Area Network or LAN. BT's new 21CN network will operate in a similar way using IP, but not necessarily over the internet, it will operate on their own 21CN network.
What is VoIP?
Voice over IP is as sounds, Voice is sent or transmitted using IP as its method to transmit voice as a data packet, a little like sending a email. For example IP can be used within an office environment over a LAN. The office LAN may not have any outside connectivity to the internet but may just be used internally. Or you may have IP Phones internally & connection to the outside world using an IP Lines or SIP.
VoIP is great for home workers where the telephone system provides extension facilities to the home worker using a broadband connection over the internet that forms a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
When is VoIP productive within a Business?
VoIP is productive within a Business if you need to extend the traditional office telephone system to different buildings using a data network. VoIP can also be used to link differnet sites geographically seperated using a centralised operator to manage calls from site to site.
VoIP telephone systems, and handsets are flexible as PCs, and therefore can be managed and administrated easily from one location over the LAN.
With 21CN do I have to change my telephone system?
Some Telecom Companies are saying you must change your telephone system to benefit from the 21CN or even that your current system will not work with the 21CN. Don't panic, it's not True.
Most systems will not notice a change. The services offered by the local BT telephone exchange to your office will not change unless you have basic ISDN2 lines (as opposed to ISDN2e) The changes are between the local exchanges on the BT network. Your old phone systems will still work over the new 21CN, so only make changes when you are ready & for good commercial, financial reasons.
If I am looking for a new system, what do I need to look out for?
When you are looking for a new system ensure it is SIP line compatable. The 21CN is not completely ready yet & will not be totally completed for some years so you don't necessarily need to have SIP now, but if the new system is SIP compatable you can upgrade the new service when you are ready & when VoIP is more reliable & cost effective.
SIP trunks or lines stands for "session initiated protocol' that is an outside line based on VoIP technology and is delivered over a broadband connection or lease line. The use of SIP trunks will increase in the years to come as the reliability improves. SIP lines are very flexible as they are delivered over a broadband connection or lease line, and can be translated in varous ways.
For example you may want an London 0207 number that is delivered over a broadband connection in another location. SIP Lines can therefore be delivered anywhere you choose over a data network ensuring for example you keep your number when you move offices or you easily redirect your number in case of disaster.
